I like this article “Thoughts on Shame and Grace” by Paul Fitzgerald. This is an interesting article as it exposes religion for what it really is – religion specialises in using shame to manipulate people.
I think this statement is worth thinking about:
“At about the same time you were pondering a “new paradigm” I was exploring a shift from seeing theology through a legal-guilt paradigm to a shame-grace point of view…. I discovered that shame is more of a dominant theme in Scripture than guilt.”
Yea, I believe this is what Jesus has come to save all of us from – “shame” which began in the garden when Adam and Eve partook from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
We know that before Adam and Eve ate the fruit, they were naked and they were not ashamed – that was truly paradise – it’s pure heaven on earth. 🙂 But eating the fruit caused them to feel ashamed after knowing good and evil, and since then, performance-based religion came into the picture and people have been trying all kinds of works to remove this sense of shame, but to no avail – it only causes them to feel more condemned and start condemning others. Thank God He loves us so much that He sent His Son to cleanse our conscience – to free us from shame, from condemnation, so that we all can live life freely and lightly, knowing we are perfect in His eyes and enjoying His acceptance and love. 🙂
