LYRICS:

How about a new thing, yeah? Cause we really need it, yeah.
How about a new thing?
We are so wrong when we’re headstrong. We claim to know your plan with such arrogance, when we don’t know. It’s trust and hope we base on evidence, and that’s all we can know.
How about a new name, yeah? Cause we really defamed it. Yeah, we really defamed it.
How about a new name? How about a new name?
We are so wrong when we’re headstrong. We claim to know your plan with such arrogance, when we don’t know. It’s trust and hope we base on evidence, and that’s all we can know.
“For he so loved…”
Isn’t love what he came here for?
Is it hell that motivates us or is it his unfailing love?
How about a new thing, yeah? Cause we really need it, yeah.

I think it is a great song to encourage and comfort all those people who have been hurt or abused by the institutional church. We know that even progressive christian teachers like Rob Bell, Gary Amirault and Brian McLaren who challenge the mainstream dogma of an angry, judgmental god have also been branded as heretics by the institutional church. We can take comfort to know we are not alone in being misunderstood – in fact we know God himself was misunderstood and was crucified by religious fundamentalists.

Like what the video says in the end, Love wins. Love will awaken each person in his or her own time to the truth that sets them free. Love is the resurrection and the life. We are seeing more of that happening, and I believe even those who have been hurt by the institutional church will sooner or later come to know the love of God that is mystical, divine, and unconditional.
