When is the “last days”?

The following is my response to a Facebook post about a so-called rapture in the last days.

From my understanding, 2 Peter was written to the first century church and the “last days” refers to the last days of the old covenant when Jerusalem would be destroyed by the Roman army in AD70.

Jesus spoke of the end times in Jewish apocalyptic language to his disciples, which is not meant for our generations today, if we take into consideration the historical context, audience relevance and time reference.

To me, the prevailing “rapture theology” distracts people from living in the here and now, and from dealing with societal and environmental issues. It also perpetuates the illusion of separateness between god and humans and between fellow human beings, from which we need to awaken in order to experience true peace and unity among humanity.
