A voice in the wilderness

“A voice is calling, “Clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness; Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God. “Let every valley be lifted up, And every mountain and hill be made low; And let the rough ground become a plain, And the rugged terrain a broad valley”

(Isaiah 40:3-4)

In the above passage, a prophet is seen as someone who calls for social justice and human rights to be restored and reinstated to the society. The rich, powerful and privileged oppressors shall be brought low, and the poor, oppressed and marginalised people shall be lifted up. Wherever there is injustice and inequality, there shall be a voice in the wilderness, heralding the good news that will take place in time to come.

One such voice has emerged lately in Singapore, through a teenaged boy called Amos Yee. In his video, he tackled boldly pertinent socio-economic and humanitarian issues such as high income inequality, political suppression and lack of free speech. He concluded the video on a hopeful note, saying, “Let’s all hope for change. For good change, for every possible kind.”
